Not America but I was living in Mindanao, Philippines in 1997. The news of her death was massive there and there were VCDs being peddled of the whole episode including the funeral. I remember an elderly Filipina getting quite emotional talking to me about how she would watch the thing over and over. There was a British man living near to me and he had friends, neighbours and relatives coming round to his house, almost formally, as a condolence type thing expressing their sympathy with him. She was very popular there as a Princess.
