I also don't get the video podcast talking head. However, my guess is that for example YouTube makes it so easy to watch people just end up clicking it and "watching" from there.
I wrote a poem about audio vs video.
The only reference you need to know is that in the book Infinite Jest, people watch a video so entertaining they don't want to do anything else and die.
