There are actually two (that I know about) clipboards on X/wayland, which is kind of nice. Just highlighting text copies it to the "primary selection" clipboard. Middle click to paste. Ctrl-c (usually, but whatever, as you say) copies to the other clipboard and Ctrl-v (or whatever) pastes, and one doesn't overwrite the other. So you can get into some real copy paste ninja situations where you use both.
