There is an aspect of "they have to be ready" but a few tips:
-You can have him sit when you go. Just to get used to the behavior and context.
-Make it fun by reading stories when he is sitting on the potty. Any books he enjoys will do, but there are also potty training specific kids books out there. One Upon a Potty is a classic. Grab some from your local library.
-Celebrate when he successfully goes in the potty.
-Likewise consider some incentives, like treats, to motivate him.
-Have a portable potty in the car. Good especially if you are on long car trips.
