After few weeks with a syrian hamster and honest digging in sources I can say one thing clear:
Don't buy your kid a damn hamster!
1) they're nocturnal, kid will never see him
2) you might get a ghost hamster = you'll never see it unless on camera or something and it's absolutely normal.
3) it's very demanding in space, depth of bedding too, any usual cage will not do. Not even those allegedly luxurious hamsterizers 2000. It's all shite.
4) hamsters need long patient taming
5) those freaking hamster balls are even classified animal abuse in Germany and for good reasons
6) hamsters need to live alone and can do without cuddling anyone their whole life. They'll very probably kill another hamster.
7) that said I'm extremely happy with my kid's hamster Hercules, because it's overall my pet and for an adult it's quite neat fun.😁
