to how the books treat things, and also how these compare to the work of Lovelace's previous tutor, William Frend, who was so conservative he rejected negative solutions to equations in his 1796 book "Principles of Algebra"!
Imagine if Lovelace had started her education with someone more in touch with contemporary mathematics....
