People make the comparison between metabolism and combustion quite a lot, which makes sense due to how similarly they work, but honestly it's kinda the other way around! *Combustion is like metabolism*, metabolism came first, most (all?) of what we consider combustible was made by living things: wood is the most obvious, but, coal, oil derivatives, natural gas and such are made of ancient plant matter, ethanol from fermentation, etc.
