Why does Cameron keep making Avatar movies? And why doesn’t anyone care? They’re not fun. They don’t say anything.

James Cameron has a lot to say about colonialism, but he knows the limits of just how much political commentary typical audiences can handle, so he waters it down with easily digestible cliches to the point where people kind of miss the commentary.

I really like the guy because of his politics. Terminator II remains not just his best film, but one with among the most important political message in any film that I have ever seen that is increasingly more relevant every day.

The best thing about Avatar is that it is not recycling intellectual property from comic books or more creative films from the 1970s-1990s. Avatar is it’s own unique world. Nowadays, I’ll give props to a film just for originality.

But I liked it for other reasons too. When I saw Avatar 2 I was thinking to myself how amazing it was that the whole film was constructed entirely out of cliches and archetypal characters we have seen in a million other films, but these cliches were sequenced together into a coherent plot line such that it kept me engaged and honestly wondering what was going to happen next. Some parts of the film actually somewhat surprised me. I think the reason for doing this was that James Cameron wanted the film to be understandable and engaging for children (i.e. profitable), but he still had an important and lengthy story to tell about the evils of colonialism, a political position with which I sympathize.

I will probably watch the next 2 films that are already in post production when they come out. I enjoyed the first two just enough that I am curious about what comes next, and I feel like Cameron deserves my support.
