This custody issue is something that really gives me hope for bitcoin. I started bought some physical gold back in 2008 and custody was never a comfortable situation.
In a safety deposit box, it can be stolen by the administrators. Buried in the garden it can be found with a metal detector.
Bitcoin is first time that we have really secure self custody storage. On top of that, the ability to have fast and cheap lightning notes on top in a decentralised way without rehypothication is a breakthrough.
You are right though, ecash mints all have capacity to create more derivative notes than they have underlying bitcoin for.
