The outer ring merely breaks down each of those arcs into their components so you can see the data on two levels at a glance. Yes burning biomass produces CO2 and I would be more comfortable if it were grouped with the other CO2 emitters. It is argued, however, that as biomass material is replaced by new growth (absorbing CO2) it is more ‘neutral’. I remain sceptical because of the time element.
