I don’t think it’s necessary for millions of people to run nodes, just those of us that are technical enough and comprehend the ethos of bitcoin. We’ll need to keep bitcoin as decentralised as possible.
I fully agree with you on bitcoin as a medium of exchange and needing layers above the mainchain. I currently like Lightning and Fedi. 🙏
