Oh shit, y’all! I just realized that nobody noticed Fire Evac Anniversary this year!
We had to pack up and run from the 2020 CZU lightning complex fires, and it fucking wrecked my (and my husband’s) mental health for years. Our kid was 5, and it was insanely stressful on him too, but he’s grown around the trauma in that way kids do.
I still can’t sit and write out the whole six-week fire experience without reopening the wounds, but I can talk a little about it. Today’s tidbit is that I woke up during the lightning. I’d never seen a lightning storm like that before, and I hope I never see anything like it again. I barely woke up when it started, and I laid there and thought “this is how the world ends.” One of the windows had a couple of redwoods growing six feet outside, so they’re mostly obscured, but I could see these almost nonstop erratic flashes of lightning through them. Everything was tinder-dry, and it was a huge dry-storm front, and obviously the forest around us was going to burn.
But there was nothing to do right then, and my consciousness dissolved and I fell asleep again.
Time to shut that memory door again, I think. Glad to be living in icy drizzle now.
