Nature’s mechanism for evolution is genetic competition. On the surface, competition is nasty and cruel… but in the long-run, competition produces variations — some of which are vast improvements — that a centralized body isn’t pushed to produce.
Bounties encourage this type of brazen competition. It is closest to grass-roots and emergent. Grants are nice for support, but maybe the bounty gives people a North Star to look forward to.
Perhaps grants to get people started and a bounty to reward them for finishing is ideal.
Just some thoughts… 💭
