The United States Department of Justice has opened a criminal investigation into New York State Attorney General Letitia James, one of President Donald Trump's main adversaries, on suspicion of mortgage fraud, the press announced on Thursday. The investigation follows a complaint by the head of the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA), appointed by Trump, that Letitia seemed to have falsified records related to properties in Virginia and New York to obtain better loan terms. Letitia denied any irregularities and said last month that she would not be intimidated. Newspapers Albany Times-Union and The Guardian, which first reported the case, said the criminal investigation into Letitia's real estate dealings involved the Department of Justice and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). In August 2022, Letitia filed a lawsuit against Trump for inflating his assets to obtain better loan terms, in which he was ordered to pay $455 million, a sentence that Trump appealed. According to the Washington Post, a grand jury issued subpoenas related to a mortgage application in which Letitia declared that a Virginia house was her primary residence. In a letter to the US Attorney General, Pam Bondi, Letitia's lawyer, Abbe Lowell, said that his client was helping her niece buy the property, and that the documents clearly indicated that she would not live in the house. Lowell emphasized that the FHFA chief, William Pulte, had "chosen to pick" an error in the loan application package.
