sorry that you encounter this problem .... This use case is indeed not well enough supported yet. It's not well documented but 1.46 grew at the last minute "attach contact" which creates a vcard file with name, email address, avatar and public key. You might create such an attachment and then create a similar one and send it to yourself or so .... Not super elegant but should work and you could automate it with a script if that is within your abilities.
