Having just listened to the FotR audiobook on a long drive, it seems like a lot of kids like Vance read the bits of Boromir's jingoistic rants early in Book 2, and then never got around to the finish of Book 2 when the forces of evil use Boromir's nationalism to drive him mad (Tolkien literally has him waving his hands in the air ranting about his glorious hosts uniting the "men of the West") and causing him to betray his friends.
