Working on commission is a good alternative for making a living from your art. You just have to choose interesting projects. Besides, the greatest artists (painters, musicians) only had commissions from notables, they didn't exhibit... I sincerely think it's better to be inspired by Michelangelo, Rembrandt, Mozart than to waste time and money trying to sell to people who don't have a penny. That was my approach as a professional photographer. But that's just my point of view 😉
