Mainstream languages don't die. Java's death rumours were greatly exaggerated since 2001 at least. And Java++ is always going to be the next Java.

Languages like Kotlin need to go in directions that Java won't go. And they do (e.g., Android, Wasm, implicits, a culture for compile-time reflection, via macros or compiler plugins, etc.)
