As mentioned downloading APKs are the first-hand way to install apps directly from the author.
Obtainium is a 3rd party app store taht allows you to fetch APKs from their source. That's my go-to for Android now and it's easier to get updates automatically rather than remembering to go to the authors website and download the new update. Obtianium has some quirks but for most FOSS android apps it works great. It relies on GitHub releases, F-Droid and a couple other common places, but it also allows scraping of html websites for APK links from the author. nostr.fmt.wiz.biz
