Getting hung up on having to log in through a Matrix instance... While I very much support decentralized identity and services, the thing that's even better is anonymous access. Having to sign up for a third-party in order to join the chat is high-friction.
Maybe by next week I'll have my own Matrix instance, and the problem will solve itself.
