I think the area of IT where you can see progress the most clearly is storage. CPUs moving from 100MHz to 5GHz is nice, but hey, storage is something different.
I remember PCs with single MBs of RAM, I remember PCs with 512MB of RAM, and today I sold 16GB of DDR3 RAM for 15 USD
