the positive germanic ideal of freedom is very bound up with duty, responsibility, living life to the fullest, etc. look at the context within which Hitler & friends used "freiheit". the words liberty and freedom have been sullen over the past century, so i understand why you'd say that. absolutely, in the modern sense, it is awful.
