while this hypothesis is valid from historical standpoint - and it's right to expect malicious intent: I do think the analysis misses a vital puzzle piece.

EU intends to make social media profiles, including personal data, followers, and all that transferrable between any arbitrary providers. Like Mastodon does it, but with steroids.

I do think threads is a test on how to compete in a market where walling a garden is illegal. Not a try to grab the market, and then wall it.

When they figure out how to compete, they will try their worst, of course. But this time they need to try a different strategy than before. And they know this.
