Let's remember that most of Europe saw the Spanish civil war as a war of Catholicism vs Communism, not right vs left. That's why a good deal of volunteers on the national side were catholics laying down their lives for Catholicism (Irish, French and Romanian). And at that time even the pope avowed Franco and said openly that God blessed his crusade against barbarism.
