I don't think it's lazy. It's a fundamental misunderstanding of what people are looking from a political party.
A friend had a big party to celebrate her US citizenship years back and I told her all about voting in NYC. "you should just register as a Democrat, the races that count are the primaries, if you want to have any impact."
"When are the meetings?"

"The meetings if you are in the Democratic party. To discuss things and plan."
