yeah, nah, the glowing atmosphere is literally caused by electrons flowing from the ionosphere down to the ground, like those ball things you touch them and the plasma lights up a channel to your fingers and glows around it, it's the exact same phenomenon - that normal air can be made to glow like that, and not just inert argon gas and suchlike as in a plasma sphere...
