There is a tradition that when a really bad character (Nazi, known KKK, Mafioso) wins a primary, the party he's in denounces him and endorses the other guy. The Democrats did that when David Duke won a primary, for example. Pretty sure that how Cheney sees it.
Also, pretty sure Piers doesn't grasp American political traditions.
