To me, it seemed like our society (US) gradually stopped taking the event seriously as we lived through the consequences of America's failed pursuit of revenge (Rampant Anti-Muslim Discrimination and Increase of Violent Surveillance Fucking Over People and Catching no terrorists, The Wars on Terror, where the terrorists were just fine after all the bloodshed). There were just issues stemming from it that affected us more than the event itself, and that they were not really focused on as they started to wear down on society.
