My understanding is that we're talking 10,000 years ago, which is likely around the end of the ice age. When the earth starts warming, then naturally, areas closer to the equator warm up faster, and thus become hospitable to life first. But as the temperature rises globally, the perfectly hospitable areas starts going further north and south, away from the equator, and the equator becomes hotter and hotter until it becomes less likely to host forests and massive plant life. Humans can no way cause such massive effects with the level of tech they had at the time. This is my current mental model at least, I make no claims to its truth or accuracy.
