I still check the NYC news even though I moved away a year ago. Their coping mechanism is looking at crime stats from the 80's to show "that it's not that bad". Of course those looking at the stats didn't live in NYC at the time and really have no comparison, but if you talk to those that have lived there since the late 70's they'll tell you that the city feels worse, no matter what the "official" stats say.
