Trade: You are one part of the process. You do the writing and revising, and possibly some light promoting (which is not the same as marketing). You'll get an advance, which is yours to keep whatever the book ends up selling. You get bookstore placement. A whole lot of people who are not you have to decide it's worth their time and investment to sell your particular book.

Self: You are the whole business. You have control over everything. You choose the cover, the editor, the timing of the release, the platforms on which the book is available. You are responsible for marketing and promotion. This will cost you time and money. (Yes, it's possible to do a lot of this free/cheap, but IMO you get what you pay for there.) You won't see bookstore placement, and (in the US, at least) you're largely beholden to Amazon. There is nobody to say no to you, which isn't always a good thing. 🙂
