I've always wanted to do a deeper dive into the that period. Jap boomers have always told me that it was terribly hedonistic and that Yakuza operated out in the open, but the only difference I'm really able to see on a surface level is that people today are poorer and Yakuza don't bring attention to themselves. Hard to say which scenario is worse.
