Last night I didn't have a phone charger handy, so I plugged my iPhone into a USB-C PD battery pack.

I'm pretty sure that what happened here was:

Quick charge for a bit
Paused charging while I was sleeping
Finished charging
The battery pack used the phone's power to top off itself. (The phone wasn't even on at this time)
