Protestants get queasy about the deification term, but (correctly understood) it's an orthodox idea.
Consider:
John 17:20-23, “I do not pray for these alone, but also for those who will believe in Me through their word; that they all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me. And the glory which You gave Me I have given them, that they may be one just as We are one: I in them, and You in Me; that they may be made perfect in one, and that the world may know that You have sent Me, and have loved them as You have loved Me."
Eph 2:21-22, "in whom the whole structure is joined together and grows into a holy temple in the Lord; in whom you also are built into it for a dwelling place of God in the Spirit."
Ephesians 5:25-30, "Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her, that He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word, that He might present her to Himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should be holy and without blemish. So husbands ought to love their own wives as their own bodies; he who loves his wife loves himself. For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as the Lord does the church. For we are members of His body, of His flesh and of His bones."
The point is not that we become self sufficient like God, but that we are brought into perfect union with Him. Progressive Christianity puts man first, and asks God to submit, which is unspeakably perverse. Mormonism tells flattering fables. Orthodox Christianity accepts and submits to the radical invitation to fellowship and life God offers us in His Son.
