it actually can be done if you have got the time and patience to do it
especially now, i mean, if you can wire it all up with gigabit ethernet, you can literally run remote X sessions on shitty hardware and have 30+fps on everything, which is gonna be fine for most people
i've never understood how mainframe works, seems like magic to me, like some kind of simple old school parallel processing scheme
