I made two videos about how to use more memory in MS DOS programs. The first is about EMS, which works even on the original IBM PC from 1981 using an expansion card:

Yes, memory handling on PCs in real mode was always a mess. I guess it goes all back to the segmented memory model. Why segmentation though? Maybe to be a bit compatible to the 8080...? Intel is weird.
