It occurs to me that the reason the divine right of kings came into existence is because pure "might makes right" wasn't particularly efficient. You can't get enough people on your side with enforceable promises. In fact, I suspect that would devolve quickly into something like anarchism if it were taken to its logical conclusion. So you need lies: religion, "democracy", "freedom". So the shift from the divine right of kings to the "social contract" was really just a modernization of the lies.
