Just a couple of miles west of it the railway line cuts through an extraordinary geological feature, a seam or dyke of rock – I think granite – which sticks up vertically from the surrounding landscape. The cutting is narrow and is also vertical sided. Going through it in a train must have been very like going through a tunnel.",
