Interesting. It's working for me, so I'd guess it's not an instance wide thing. There's nothing in the configurations or options we can use to change that for you specifically. It looks like you've got the settings right based on your screen shot. I guess I'd try turning that "In column" off, logging off Fosstodon and clearing Fosstodon specific cookies, and then logging back in and turning the "In column" back on.
