As a 6-year-old new to Hawaii as a haole, my parents would just watch, hands-off but at the ready, whenever I was outnumbered by local kids. Let me deal with it myself instead of being rescued or being interdicted. I needed to earn my place in the neighborhood. I always stood my ground and they never rescued me.
