Agree for "normal" commercial traffic, but wartime traffic patterns will be different. A big move by China would mean the US wanting to move a lot of force/support west towards Japan, Singapore, Australia, etc. and it is crazy hard to do that from San Diego if Hawaii is in enemy hands.
