I do nothing in particular with the soil there that other gardeners wouldn't do. I cover slots with manure before the winter sets in and shovel runoff soil over it back onto the heaps, not wanting to waste my best soil. For peppers et al I'd also add two year old or older compost and lime between sites. I don't use anything inorganic in the garden. We've very similar climate to yours here, only I'm from the old continent.
