Sadly, many of us susceptible to this kind of thing because we've bought into or been nurtured by a deep anti-intellectual, authoritarian strain in American culture that is aided and abetted by right-wing religion.
The consequences are bitter. My hope is that they will not be irreversible. But I fear we are in for a rough ride.
