I can't even get away from it with some amount of confidence:
- SMS isn't an option -- the Chinese are inside the grid
- XMPP is extremely unfriendly to new users
- Matrix is a mixed bag, official implementation is the Google Chrome of the Matrix world
- IRC is too dated, it has none of the modern features Discord people like, like no permanent channels out of the box
