He's definitely easier to understand. Nobody handed Lex his future. He made it himself. Superman is called 'the Man of Tomorrow.' Lex Luthor literally IS the Man of Tomorrow. His effort and mind put him at least five decades ahead of anyone else on earth. And his iron-like will allows him to lock horns with beings far smarter and stronger than him. In any other context, Lex Luthor would be the hero of his own comic. He'd be a Nietzschean Superman rather than the antagonist.
