I fell down a deep Wikipedia hole last month because the history of the playing card is so interesting!
What started as 9th Century Tang Dynasty block-printed money cards spread through the Islamic world through Persia all the way to Egypt.
It's believed that the symbols for the Chinese money suits: Coin (o), String of Coins (|), Myriad (万), and Ten Myriads (十) were re-interpreted by the Muslims as: Coin, Baton, Cup, and Sword respectively.
