Ringgit ends lower against greenback

The ringgit ended lower against the US dollar, trading at 4.7200/7225 compared to Monday's close of 4.7120/7155. The US manufacturing sector contracted for a third straight month, with the Institute for Supply Management's Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) slipping to 48.5 points in June. Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid attributed the weaker demand in the US to companies being unwilling to invest in capital and inventory due to the restrictive monetary policy adopted by the US Federal Reserve. The ringgit was higher against a basket of major currencies and stronger against its ASEAN peers.
