Im a hush puppy traditionalist. I stick to a basic sweet onion batter.
Other people like to add all sorts of things like cheese, bell peppers, hot peppers, to their recipes.
Hush Puppies are so named as they were traditionally made by plantation slaves in the American South, and used to quiet the dogs, so that they could sneak food out of the master's kitchen.
It's a fritter made from corn meal flour, eggs, butter, sugar, water and with some onion and or peppers.
The key to hush puppies is to fry them at a lower oil temperature than you normally deep fry at. So more like 275-300 degrees instead of 350 degrees.
