I think people don't really understand how finishing your university education at the same time a major worldwide financial disaster is beginning can destabilize your entire life.
Time doesn't stand still. You have to find ways to survive. And even after the worst of the financial crisis' effects pass, the number of years you spend on a divergent path may be the same or more than the number of years you were preparing for the future.
