For software with appeal to a lot of people, the "paid model" doesn't really work. But more workable when the software I write gives the paying customer a business advantage and it is in their own interest to not give this to their competitors.
However this is very rare, not only because of not much software is that important, but also because Legal Counsel at companies have given instructions on how to use FOSS
